The Finest Examples
of Jamaican Intuitive Art.
I am Veron Williams, also known as Israel. My works of art is considered to be some of the finest examples of Jamaican art. My works displays a nieve realism that brings memories of Jamaican beauty into reality. Y can almost touch the trees, taste the salt of the sea scapes, relax on the sunny beaches and catch the folklore culture. You can feel the people living inside the houses, engage in children's games and breathe the air of the illustrated places. Like Grandma moses and Henri Rousseau before me, my work portrays personal vision that is motivated for it's need for expression.
ABOUT
I was born on February 13, 1958, in the parish of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica West Indies. At the age of five my talent as an artist was discovered by my prep school teacher. When she asked the class to illustrate "Three Green Bottles Sitting on the Wall". When mine was completed and handed in, I was awarded a merit for best realistic drawing. Since then my inclination began to improve. I used to write, and draw on walls, paper, floors anything that had a surface was my canvas. I got into a lot of trouble. As a result I become more inventive and began to get ideas on how to create my own materials to draw on. I was not able to buy paints or brushes. My parents avoided that, because of mess I would make. So I moved to plan B. I used colors from brightly colored butterflies wings and vegetables, like carrots, beet, pumpkin, tomatoes, watermelons, mangos etc. I got my earth colors from the soil around me - assorted colors of clay, colorful stones found in my surroundings. Brushes were made from animal fur, goat beards and tail, cows as well and straws from palm trees.
As a young adult, I settled in the city of Montego Bay. While exploring Montego Bay I discovered several galleries that featured "intuitive art". I began to exhibit in all the major galleries, including The National Gallery of Jamaica where I has exhibited annually since 1985. I, unlike many other artist, was able to support myself through my art. In answer to being asked about my training as an artist, I say, "yes I was formally trained by my ancestors, who was before me in Africa".
